Welcome to MSI Mold Builders' 47,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our Cedar Rapids facility is known for the manufacture of medium to large molds, packages of molds and employs 65. MSI has one other facility strategically located to better serve our customers in the South East. Our combined capabilities allow our 90 employees to effectively produce complex small to large molds weighing up to 150,000 pounds.

Dino Hi-Speed CNC

A wide variety of tools are produced in our Iowa location.  Tools that are as small as eight by eight inches that may run in a MUD base to tools sized for 1500 to 3000 ton presses and are six by eight feet in size.  Our focus is on producing the best tool for our customer with the most aggressive delivery schedule possible.   Lean activities, continuous process improvement, and a commitment to ISO principals are embedded in our company DNA.  Employees are trained in critical thinking and decision making with a focus on consistent performance to our manufacturing standards.  

MSI Gun DrillMSI Mold Builders has long been known for its advances in Lean Manufacturing processes at its facilities.  We pride ourselves in being a very process-driven organization, working to maximize efficiencies in all aspects of the business.  From the request for quote to the finished mold shipping, we work to do things in the best way possible to assure our customer the best cost, quality and delivery possible.  Being a process-driven company helped us achieve our ISO 9001:2008 Certification in 2010.

MSI's engineering department is committed to providing a full service design and engineering team to take your concept from design to completed mold. Our engineering team uses ProE and Solid Works 3D solid model design software. We have developed unique processes that allow us to standardize mold designs and subsequently reduce manufacturing lead times. Our extensive design experience and process-driven approach allow us to minimize cost overruns throughout the manufacturing cycle. Our goal is to continue to improve our design processes and systems to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction.

MSI Charmilles 084 EDMOur plant layout is conducive to facilitate work flow from receipt of materials until final product shipment.    Each machine placement is evaluated to facilitate a proper flow.  Work cells have been created for Ejector box production, small component production and EDM activities.  
CNC programming is 100% completed on the shop floor by the machine operator.  Electrode extraction and modeling is completed on the shop floor as tools are completed on the three and 5 axis CNC machines to meet the needs of EDM.  All operators are trained for the specific type of operations that are being performed.  Prospector, Lemoine, Cimatron and Tebis are used to create tool path for our CNC and EDM operations.

MSI Cincinnati Sampling PressAssembly time has been reduced from days to hours because of improved manufacturing process that makes assembly less of a trial fit to simple assembly, verification and inspection.  Mold sampling can be accomplished with our 3000 ton Van Dorn 400 oz shot press or 1000 ton Cincinnati VL1000 179 oz. shot press.Van Dorn 3000T Press
